Local government plays a role in supporting the health and well-being of all community members. Whether it is access to clean drinking water or safe public outdoor spaces for children and families to play, local government is a strong partner for health. Building a health community includes working together to develop programs, policies, resources and a supportive environment that makes the healthy choice the easy and preferred choice.

5 SERVINGS FRUIT + VEGGIES

FRUIT AND VEGYouth

Community gardens are a great place to learn new skills, volunteer and meet new people. Here you can learn about the importance of fruits and vegetables for health as well as how to grow and harvest your own.

The food we eat has a direct impact on our health. Together we can work towards building a food system where all members of our community have the money and physical access to nutritious, affordable, culturally appropriate food. As community members we can encourage change by getting involved in committees, volunteering and thinking about where and how we get our food.

Choose to boost veggies and fruit! Learn why vegetables and fruit are the best to fuel your body. Watch videos and discover interactive apps to colour up your life!

2 or Less Hours Recreational Screen Time

Youth

Are you glued to your phone, computer, or iPad too often? Have you tried geocaching? Discover the different sites around your community as you search for geocaches!

Parent

Check out the different activities available in the community that offer an alternative to technology such as the museum, library, or outdoor spaces. Activity Guides are a great source of information.

Staff

Promote different activities and programs available in the community that provide technology free options for children to increase activity. Add technology breaks to programs, encouraging kids to unplug and play.

2 HOURS OR LESS RECREATIONAL SCREEN TIME LEARN MORE  Take a break, turn it off. Unplug and play! Learn how screen time can affect your health and try new ways to set healthy screen time limits. Be sure not to stay too long!

1 Hour Physical Activity

Youth

Whether it is outdoors or indoors there are places in your community every season that offer options for physical activity. Check out a park, drop-in at a free swim, explore the trails, play a game of pick-up basketball or join friends for a game of road hockey.

Parent

Explore with your family the outdoor spaces in the community that support active, healthy living. Visit a playground near you, take a journey along the trails, and enjoy our waterfront parks. When we get outside we are more active, it’s free and best of all it’s fun!

Staff

YLocal government plays an important role in the planning and designing of communities creating outdoor and indoor spaces that support health. From bike lanes to skateboard parks the design of the community and the programs available work to encourage and support healthy, active living for all.

1 HOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEARN MORE Run • Jump • Play • Everyday • Watch cool videos to learn about new activities and sports you can enjoy with friends. Start a family competition and have everyone track their steps with one of the suggested apps!

0 Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

Youth

Don’t forget your water bottle! Look for water bottle refill stations or the BlueW sticker in storefront windows to fill-up and make water your first choice for thirst!

Parent

Pack a water bottle as part of your every day routine and look for water bottle stations or the BlueW sticker in your community to refill. Take the Water Does Wonders Pledge! Encourage the installation of new water stations or the removal of sugar-sweetened drinks from youth programs or facilities.

Staff

Ensure access to drinking water for children and families in areas where play, physical activities and sports most often occur! Offer water at meetings, events or activities. Consider installing indoor or outdoor water bottle refill stations or removing sugar-sweetened beverages from municipal vending machines.
